Synthesis of Polystyrene-b-Polyisobutylene Block Copolymers and Their Application in Butyl Rubber Slurry Stabilizers
Using a cumyl chloride (CumCl)/titanium tetrachloride (TiCl
4
)/2
6-di-
tert
-butylpyridine (DtBP) initiating system
the sequential cationic block polymerization of styrene (St) and isobutylene (IB) was successfully conducted in dichloromethane (CH
2
Cl
2
) at −80 ℃
affording polystyrene-
b
-polyisobutylene (PS-
b
-PIB). Rapid initiation and nearly quantitative conversion of styrene (St) were achieved by adjusting the concentrations of CumCl and TiCl
4
in the system. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (
1
H-NMR) spectroscopy revealed that when the concentrations of CumCl and TiCl
4
were 8.7 and 45 mmol/L
respectively
and the polymerization time was 3 min
the proportion of active chlorine end groups relative to cumyl initiating end groups in the resulting polystyrene (PS) reached approximately 86%. Upon the subsequent addition of the IB monomer
block copolymerization proceeded successfully. After purification with acetone and n-hexane to remove residual PS and PIB homopolymers
a PS-
b
-PIB diblock copolymer with a number-average molecular weight (
M
n
) of 2.14×10
4
g/mol and a molecular weight dispersity (
M
w
/
M
n
) of 1.95 was obtained. A simulated butyl rubber slurry was prepared using meth
yl ethyl ketone (MEK) and PIB680
and the addition of 1 wt% PS-
b
-PIB afforded a stable dispersion. Notably
the experimental results further demonstrated that the crude block copolymer product could be directly used without acetone and n-hexane purification
while still achieving stable emulsification.
