Halogen-free flame retardants are introduced into PVA to replace the conventional halogen-contained flame retardant owning to the increasing environmental pressure. The current research progress and development trend of halogen-free flame retardant for Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were reviewed. The studies of various kinds of PVA flame retardants containing inorganic flame retardant
phosphorus/nitrogen contained flame retardant
intumescent flame retardant and reactive flame retardant were summarized and analyzed. The flame retarding mechanism
the advantages and disadvantages of different PVA flame retardant
and the influence of typical flame retardant on properties of PVA were introduced. On this basis
the uniqueness of PVA flame retardant was discussed. The trend of PVA flame retardant research is to develop a compound formula suitable for PVA processing considering the structural features of PVA.
