To overcome the strong dependence of ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN)-initiated surface graft polymerization of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) on highly acidic environments and address the environmental issues associated with conventional processes
this study developed a green preparation method for CNC-grafted polyacrylamide (PAM) in an aqueous non-strong acid system. Using commercially available CNC as raw material
nanoscale dispersion of CNC was achieved through ball milling-ultrasonic synergistic pretreatment. A one-pot aqueous method was adopted
employing CAN as an initiator to accomplish PAM graft polymerization on the CNC surface under mild acidic conditions
yielding CNC-PAM composite materials. The structure of the grafted product was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy
transmission electron microscopy
and zeta potential measurements
while its dispersibility and rheological properties were analyzed using dynamic light scattering and rheological tests. The results indicate that PAM was successfully grafted onto the CNC surface
forming a core-shell structure. When the AM/CNC mass ratio reached 10:1
the PAM grafting ratio was (135.7±7.2)%. The CNC-PAM product maintained a nanoscale dispersion with good dispersibility in aqueous media
exhibiting an average particle size of 71 nm. It demonstrated excellent rheological properties
with a viscosity of 1136.3 mPa·s for a 1% CNC-PAM (
m

m
(CNC)=10/1) aqueous solution
alongside notable thermal stability
salt tolerance
and superior thickening performance. This study represents the first successful implementation of CAN-initiated efficient grafting of PAM onto CNC in an aqueous system with a weak acid. This process is environmentally friendly and operationally straightforward. The prepared CNC-PAM composite holds potential as a green oil-displacing agent
offering a novel pathway for the green industrial production of polymer-grafted CNCs and providing both material and technical support for the eco-friendly upgrading of oilfield chemicals.
