Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) as a kind of thermoplastic bio-polymer synthesized by microbial fermentation
presents the advantages of good biodegradability
histocompatibility
etc. The recent research developments of PHBV were introduced from physical
chemical modification and its fiber forming. The physical modification of PHBV are composed of PHBV/inorganics nanocomposites
PHBV/organics nanocomposites
PHBV/petroleum-based polymer composites and fully bio-degradable composites
while the chemical modification was proceeded by graft modification
block modification and copolymerization modification. The advantages and disadvantages of modified PHBV have been compared and discussed from the modified methods and medium. The fiber formation of modified PHBV are mainly processed by melt spinning
dry spinning and electrospinning method. The melt spun PHBV fibers will be targeted to substitute some of the synthetic petroleum-based fibers like PP
PET fibers
while electrostrun PHBV fibers will be successfully and widely used in the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicines. Moreover
the further research and development direction of PHBV were also presented.
