The criteria for cellulose and its derivatives to form a liquid crystalline (LC) phase are discussed. Both lyotropic and thermotropic LC properties are reviewed. The rheological properties
formation and processing of LC cellulose and its derivatives are introduced. Fibrillar and banded structure are observed for the fibres and films which have medium mechanical properties. The understanding of cholesteric-nematic phase transition has not been completely explained. Future research activity on LC eellulose and its derivatives is mentioned in this article.
