Parylene films

which are made by vacuum vapor deposition and polymerization and have some excellent properties

was first developed industrially by Union Carbide Corporation in mid-1960s. Parylene films have become a new type of material for rubber surface modification

for the improvement of mechanical properties

chemical and oil resistance

barrier properties

surface friction and lubrication properties

electrical insulation and voltage resistance

and biocompatibility of rubber products. Based on the authors'working experience

the preparation method

the properties and the applications of the parylene films in rubber products such as silicone rubber keypads

rubber seal rings

inner liners and inner tubes

medical rubber products and micro electro mechanical systems were reviewed in this paper. The research and application prospects of parylene films were also briefly discussed.
