N-dimethyl-N-methacryloyloxyethyl) ammonium propyl sulfonate (DMAPS) was synthesized by methacryloxy ethyl dimethyl amine (DM) and 1
3-propane sultone. Through free radical polymerization
polyampholyte copolymer P(AA-
co
-DMAPS) was prepared from DMAPS and AA in which ammonium persulfate as the initiator and sodium hypophosphite as chain transfer agent. DMAPS and P(AA-
co
-DMAPS) were characterized by FT-IR
1 H NMR and GPC. The effect of reaction parameters on the dispersion of ceramic slurries was studied by the method of single factor experiment and orthogonal experiment. The viscosities of ceramic slurries were also compared with poly (acrylic acid) (PA) and sodium tripolyphosphate (STP). The results showed that the optimum parameters for P(AA-
co
-DMAPS) was at 80 ℃ of reaction temperature
with molar ratio (AA: DMAPS= 2:1). Moreover
the results showed that P(AA-
co
-DMAPS) had excellent water-reducing capacities
which indicated that P (AA-
co
-DMAPS) can be used as potential water-reducer for ceramic industry.
