Conventional liposomal and many nano-carriers realize drug delivery through entrapment. Metal-organic frameworks

covalent-organic frameworks and supramolecular organic frameworks represents different kinds of periodic porous architectures with controlled nano-scaled sizes. These frameworks can entrap molecular drugs through non-covalent interactions or covalent linking and provide new opportunity for drug delivery. This paper summarizes the research advance of the new porous architectures for this application. Their structural features and advantages as porous carriers are systematically analyzed. By comparing with the clinically approved liposomal technique

the challenges for practical applications of these porous frameworks as drug-carriers are also provided.
