Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is widely used in many fields for excellent physical and mechanical properties. However
it is easy to form molecular chain entanglement for the extremely high molecular weight of UHMWPE
which dominates the long-range motion of UHMWPE molecular chain
affects the aggregate structure and the various properties of UHMWPE. Therefore
regulating the degree of molecular chain entanglement of UHMWPE is of particular importance to improve its processability and performance. In this review
the methods of regulating entanglement of molecular chains and the mechanism of disentanglement are summarized
including dissoluting UHMWPE in solvents
changing the crystallization conditions
blending modification and processing under different flow fields. The development of the regulating methods used for the molecular chain entanglement of UHMWPE is prospected.
