one kind of novel quaternary ammonium salt was synthesized
and used to prepare the watersoluble chitosan (CS38)
via
condensation reaction. Layer-by-layer self-assembly process were used to prepare the antimicrobial and hemostatic cotton fabric. The physical and chemical structures of the modified cotton fabric were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). It was found that the warp and weft breaking force retention rate of modified cotton was about 70%. The sample still showed good breaking force properties even after modification. The addition of water-soluble chitosan enhanced the hemostatic and antimicrobial properties of original cotton significantly. The blooding clotting index (BCI) of modified sample was decreased from 75±8 to 25±4. This modified cotton fabric expressed good antimicrobial properties and inactivated 81.08% and 73.21% of
E. coli
O157∶H7 and
S. aureus
with 6.57 and 6.45 logs reductions within 60 min of contact
respectively. The antimicrobial properties of modified sample were increased significantly with the addition of self-assembly layers.
