Polypropylene (PP) is one of the widely used materials in medical apparatus and instruments
owing to its inexpensive
non-toxic and excellent mechanical properties. When hydrophobic polypropylene is exposed to blood
plasma proteins are adsorbed to the surface
and then surface-induced platelet adhesion
subsequent thrombus and hemolysis occur. Hemocompatibility is one of major problems that limit the long period application of biomedical materials. In this paper
the recent progress of the surface modification of polypropylene
the methods and monomers to improve hemocompatibility are reviewed. Meanwhile
limitation of the modification and the prospect of polypropylene with hemocompatibility were presented.
