This review focuses on the recent progress of self-assembly and functionalization of protein-based macrocycles. Taking the most popular protein macrocycles as example
the structural features
fabrication strategies and functions of these well-explored protein-macrocycles were analyzed and compared. As a new kind of biogenic polymeric macrocycle
protein-macrocycles serve as the evolutionary product of biopolymer science and macrocyclic chemistry. The protein-macrocyclic structure provides a novel design material and construction platform for fabrication of functional polymers. With the accumulated knowledge of kinetics and thermodynamic behaviors
the manipulation of the self-assembly process of protein-macrocycles will become skilled.
