Biao ZUO. Exploration of Ways to Teach Polymer Glass Transition under the Framework of Glass Physics[J]. Polymer Bulletin, 2022,35(3):70-72. DOI: 10.14028/j.cnki.1003-3726.2022.03.009.
Glass transition is an important concept in the teaching of polymer physics. In some polymer physics textbook
the glass transition is described as the transition temperature in which the materials were transformed from glassy to the rubbery state. Such definition
mainly from the variation of mechanical property induced by temperature
is easily understandable
but however miss the key and essential points of the glass transition phenomenon
even leading the student having false impression that glass transition is a unique property of polymer. To this context
we tried to teach glass transition under the framework of glass physics; describe the glass transition as a general feature of amorphous materials and emphasizes the nature of glass transition — a transition from supercooled liquid to solid glass induced by the mobility freeze-in. Then
the glass transition of polymer and the remarkable changes in mechanical properties were introduced as a special attention. We hope that this disparate way of teaching polymer glass transition could help students to establish comprehensive and precise understandings on the phenomenon of glass transition and polymer glass transition.
